WORLD CHAMPION IN FIRST TRY

Yeang Kong Zhen, age 13 created history by becoming the first Malaysian to emerge as champion in Kihon Category under 9 – 10 kyu of the 33rd World Sports Chanbara Championship 2007 held on November 4th, 2007.

The 13 year old showed great determination to beat over 80 contestants to emerge champion in Kihon and a 3rd placing in the kodachi – short sword category. the event was held at the Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium, Yokohama, Japan.

The jubilant world champion said that he had no pressure as this was his first outing but he had expectations on himself as he was the reigning Asia Chanbara Champion under 9 -10 kyu. he added that he took up the sports as a hobby and his coaches Seow Chai Teong and Justin Khoo of Budo Academy Penang spotted a potential in him and urged him to take the sport up seriously.

Yeang added that he will try even harder next year as Malaysia has tentively been chosen to host the next Asia / Oceania Sports Chanbara Championship in Penang.
